Mr Max E Tawil, popularly known as "Mac," was an expert Ba'al Qore (Torah Reader) in the Syrian Jewish community of Brooklyn. The son of Mr Ezra and Rachel (Maslaton) Tawil, Mac is most well known for serving the community as the official Torah Reader in the Dome of Shaare Zion for more than 30 years. In addition to serving as a teacher at Magen David Elementary School and a Bar Misvah tutor, his contribution to this website is his permission to upload all of his recordings of Torah chanting (first aliya of every perasha), the entire Book of Psalms (Tehilim), Mishle (5 chapters), Iyob (20 chapters), and the five Megillot.
An extremely modest and humble individual, the memory of Mr Mac Tawil serves as an excellent role model as he has made a profound impact on the lives of all those who knew him. The community is endebted to him for his commitment to teaching its youth.
Towards the end of his life, Mac kept on repeating the words "Zakhiti" (זכיתי); making it clear to all of his visitors that he has recognized that he has lived a life of meaning and was lucky to have made such a tremendous impact on the lives of others.
Mr Max E Tawil passed away on May 2, 2018, on the eve of Lag La'Omer. Survived by his wife Eva, and children, Rachelle (Betesh), H Ezra, R' Joey, and R' Danny, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
